Celebrating Resilience in Ridge Hill & Stalybridge – Wheelbarrow Planter Design for RHS Wentworth Over 16s Container
A collaborative project between The Power of Resilience CIC and RidgeHill Big Local Hub/Ridge Hill Together CIC
This upcycled wheelbarrow bursts with life, colour, and meaning, representing the enduring resilience and shared identity of Ridge Hill and Stalybridge. At its heart, a small water feature flows into the barrel, a striking tribute to both the life-giving waters of the River Tame and Huddersfield Canal and the town’s notorious charm and conviviality—a nod to the famed Stalybridge Ale Trail and the social spirit it embodies.

Planting and Symbolism:
Resilience – Featuring hardy species, symbolising how strength can grow in even the toughest places—just like the people of Ridge Hill and Stalybridge.
Planting which reflects the community’s inner power—rooted, enduring, and able to thrive even in Stalybridge’s tough clay soil.
Community – companion plants symbolise mutual support and collective wellness, showing how we flourish when we grow together.
Water & Barrel – The flowing water feature connects the history of the canal and river to the barrel, linking nature and industry, and celebrating Stalybridge’s colourful reputation and cultural richness.

A Living Story:
This design tells the story of working-class resilience, shared growth, and the unique character of our town—from community gardens and local history to friendship and celebration. It invites viewers to explore how places like Ridge Hill and Stalybridge can regenerate through creativity, nature, and unity.
