12th September 2025 – across Tameside
The Baton of Hope is the UK’s largest suicide prevention initiative, dedicated to raising awareness and fostering open conversations about mental health. Founded by Mike McCarthy and Steve Phillip, both of whom have been personally affected by suicide, the initiative seeks to challenge stigma and promote practical change to save lives.

Tameside faces one of the highest suicide rates in Greater Manchester, with socio-economic challenges such as unemployment and social isolation contributing to mental health struggles. The Baton of Hope is a vital opportunity to break stigma, foster lifesaving conversations, and inspire community-wide action. As an organisation, The Power of Resilience CIC is partnering with The Anthony Seddon Fund in raising awareness of this across the borough.
Our Baton Bearers:

Julie Mallinson: Executive Director
‘I want to carry the Baton of Hope to honour those we’ve lost to suicide, to stand in solidarity with those who are struggling, and to be a visible reminder that hope is always possible. I am an autistic suicide survivor and someone who believes in the power of compassion, conversation, and connection to save lives. Carrying the baton is not just symbolic — it’s a commitment to breaking the silence, challenging stigma, and being a voice of hope for those who feel unheard.’
